🌱 Dalla consapevolezza all’azione

🌊⚓ From wreck to rebirth: when sustainability becomes agency

On Friday, March 27th, the 26 participants of the Erasmus+ youth exchange “Sustainability Beyond Borders: Awareness to Action” – from 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇮🇹 Italy, 🇬🇷 Greece, 🇪🇸 Spain and 🇮🇪 Ireland – experienced one of the most meaningful moments of the entire week: a visit to the Lorkinos, moored in the Gulf of Naples.

⚓ A story of transformation

The Lorkinos is no ordinary boat. It was a fishing vessel seized in 2021 by the Italian Financial Police during an anti-illegal immigration operation, with 274 people on board. Confiscated from organised crime, it could have remained a wreck — physical and symbolic. Instead, thanks to the social enterprise Isolahabile, founded in Naples in 2022, it became something radically different: a fully accessible cultural, sports and social hub for people with disabilities, a floating laboratory of inclusion and legality in the heart of the Mediterranean.

♻️ Why Lorkinos is Sustainability

Talking about sustainability only in terms of emissions, waste and consumption is reductive. The real transition towards a more sustainable world also passes — and perhaps above all — through the ability to imagine a second life for what seemed lost, and to build spaces where no one is left behind. Lorkinos embodies both dimensions: it is the ecological transformation of a wreck into a collective resource, and, at the same time, the social transformation of a historically exclusive space — the sea — into a space of rights, where people with disabilities are not guests but protagonists. 🧡

The message that the young people received from visiting Lorkinos is simple and powerful: sustainability is not only an environmental issue. It is a question of justice. It means asking who has access to resources, who is included and who is excluded, and acting accordingly.

🎶💃 An afternoon of cultures in dialogue

After the visit, participants gathered for an intercultural event: everyone brought something from their own country — traditional products, flavours, stories. The afternoon snack turned into a European table, where, alongside the food, traditional music and dances accompanied it. Each country shared something of itself — a rhythm, a movement, a melody — and the result was exactly what a European exchange should be: the discovery that differences do not divide, but enrich. That we can be deeply different in the details and deeply alike in our emotions.

🌱 From awareness to action

The title of the exchange — “Sustainability Beyond Borders: Awareness to Action” — is not just a slogan. It is a direction. Visiting Lorkinos meant experiencing first-hand that action is possible, that transformations happen, and that they often start from those who decide to look at a problem from a different angle. A vessel of organised crime becomes a ship of inclusion. A wreck becomes a starting point.

These are the seeds that 26 young people from five European countries are taking home with them. 🇱🇹🇮🇹🇬🇷🇪🇸🇮🇪
